WEEK 6 BLOG (2/13 - 2/19)

This week's blog assignment revolves around the debate that has raged over the past couple weeks concerning Nuclear Weapons.

Pretty simple, where do you stand?  What should we do?  (PART I due 2/16; PART II due 2/19)

  1. I think that we should keep the nuclear weapons in the case we really do need to use them. With living in the U.S. we have lots of resources that other countries would like to get a hold of. If we got rid of our nukes and the other countries didn't then we would be on the losing end of that battle. Or instead of having a war last for five to ten years we could end it with one strike if needed

    1. I agree we should keep most of the nuclear weapons. We need to stay superior to other countries so no one will want to attack on us. Our weapons are used as deterrence and it has worked so far, so let's continue to do that, right? Yeah ok.

    2. I agree. By keeping them we show power and other countries don't want to mess with us. And like Josh said, we could end a war with one drop of a bomb.

    3. I agree. If we keep them we show we are still very powerful. If we do get rid of the we will probably end up making more because we will look weak and we will have th resources to do it.

    4. I agree we should keep our nukes. Maybe no all of them but a majority of them. With out nukes we have no threat to the countries that do have them.

    5. Josh is right, and i have been saying this, we should keep most of them get rid of some but deffinetly keep a lot of them to make sure we are safe..

  2. I think that all nukes need to be gotten rid of. I say this because mainly, it's not going to happen. But if we say that we and other countries have gotten rid of them all, then realistically, there will still be plenty left to defend ourselves and others. I think there will never be a day that we will not have them, because the technology to make them will always be around from here on out, and there is no way to erase the knowledge some may hold. I would absolutely love a day where there would be no more nukes, but with Iran going crazy, Russia being shady, and our own country often not being honest, its just not a plausible scenario. And with todays world having a Cold War 2, it may be best to keep a good amount for if we would ever need it. I honestly hope we would never need to use nukes against another country ever again, but it's always something that we as a nation need to keep in mind if the time ever comes.

    1. I agree that we should get rid of all of them, but that it'll never happen because the worlds leaders are too concerned with who's the most powerful country out there and getting rid of their most powerful weapon makes them feel inferior and weak compared to those that have them.

    2. i agree with alek we should get rid of them but that will never happen because countries want power and authority

  3. I think we sould keep most of our nuclear weapons and only get rid of some of them. We should keep most of them just in case it comes down to us needing them. Hopefully it will not come down to it but you just never know. If we get rid of some of them we could test them, we have already tested over 1000 of them so i dont think more is going to hurt.

    1. I agree with our getting rid of many nukes. However, testing them has caused serious damage already. They've banned testing in or over water due to the harmful chemicals it puts into our aquatic system. On land, these bombs have majorly hurt dessert ecosyestems, destroyed biodiversity in many areas, and killed everything in it's path. There's no safe way to test these bombs, so that should stop too.

  4. We need to keep nukes. Plain and simple. Im not saying that we need to keep all of them but enough to deter others from wanting to attack us with nukes. To think that the world could get rid of all of its nukes in naive and incompetent. Banning nukes from the world is like trying to outlaw guns. The good guys (U.S and most of Europe)would destroy all of their nuclear weapons but the bad guys (Iran and other middle eastern countries) would keep their weapons and use them against us and our allies. It would be like the Soviet Union deal where we had no idea that a city name Stepnogorsk was even real. There would be many hidden and under cover nukes that would have the possibility of destroying the U.S. Getting rid of nukes would be committing suicide. I do not trust Iran and believe that we need to keep a very close eye on them in the next few months. They are up to no good and are planning to hit us with whatever they have. We need to be able to retaliate because as we have seen in the past, there is no negotiating with them.

  5. Personally, I believe we need to keep the nuclear weapons that we have. I think if we destroyed them, or attempted to, something could go horribly wrong. I think it is more likely for an accident to cause the "end of the world" than a nuclear war because I don't believe a nuclear war is going to happen. If we keep up with nuclear technology while our competitors are still years behind us, they wouldn't attack us. Why try to blow up something with 100 bombs if we could do it in ten? I think we should stick to deterrence because it's been working since the mid 1950's. Not one country wants to risk their livelihood for a nuclear war. I do not believe we should have mass production of these weapons, but I think it would be idiotic and only cause harm if we were to destroy something so powerful.

  6. I think we should keep our nuclear weapons. Getting rid of them will only make the United States weaker. By keeping them, we show that we have the most powerful weapon on the earth and will use it if needed. Other countries will have these kinds of weapons whether we get rid of ours or not. Our nukes are a sign of power and strenth and without them we render some of the power we have as a country. I'm not saying we should use them anytime soon but it is a great defense that we have in case others decide to mess with us.

  7. I wish we could just go back into time and never allow them to be made, but we can't. I wish that we could just get rid of them, what are we going to do with them? You just can't get rid of them. But since they are already made, I believe we should keep most of them. I believe we should just get rid of some useless and extra ones laying around. But we need to keep enough to use when they need to desperatley be used.

    1. I agree, since we already have them, we should keep them. We never know when we will need them so we should always have them ready just in case.

    2. I agree... Keeping them can show that we are the dominance in the world

    3. I agree that we need to keep them in case something bad happends. We can't just dispose of them.

    4. But how do we get rid of them safely? I don't think there's a perfect way because in a matter of years, it could resurface. Russia thought they had disposed of theirs, but in reality, all they did was make a barren island very lethal. In all honesty, I think we have to live with the monster we created because there is no safe dissembling of it.

    5. I agree Matt. They should never have been made but since we do have them we must keep them to make sure that no one uses them against us.

  8. Now that the technology exists there is no easy solution. There will be incidents and there will be problems. There are many people smarter than I who can devise a strategy of how but I believe the best thing we can do is stop producing the nukes and somehow try to keep tabs on every nuke in existence and every human with the know how to make or aquire one. This is my only hope because there really is no chance of destroying all our nukes. We need levels of international cooperation never seen before for this to work though.

    1. How would it be possible to keep tabs on every person with nukes? We can barely keep track all of what we're creating, much less spend time on different countries and, possibly, our enemies. In addition, if we stop creating new nukes now, we could fall so behind in technology. Though nuclear weapons may not be the answer, letting those who want power of us get ahead of us would be disastrous.

    2. Isn't that the problem though? If we can't keep track of even our own nuclear weapons how will we be able to stop or protect ourselves from proliferation? Terrorist groups could get ahold of these weapons and as they've unfortunately proven in the past they are more than willing to take deadly action regardless of the consequences.

  9. I think that we should do whatever's possible to get rid of as many as possible. If that means increasing our spending, then so be it. If the major ciuntries if the world got rid of their weapons, other countries will eventually follow. We should come up with a new type of weapon defense that is less dangerous to the earth, but is still powerful enough yo be a deterrence to other countries.

    1. I really like your idea of finding a new less dangerous but still imposing weapon. I'm not sure how it would work but it would be greay to find a new one that is more controllable and less easily prooliferated or launched.

  10. While I wish that total disarmament of all nuclear weapons around the world was a plausible and real solution in our future I know that it is not. I do however believe that the U.S. and other nuclear countries should begin significantly decreasing the number of nuclear weapons that we have (I mean really whats the point of having a 1000+ nukes when thirty will destroy the world?). I believe that people today do not comprehend what a nuclear strike on another nation would do to our world environmentally, morally, and economically. Nuclear bombs of our era are much more powerful than those dropped in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Using a weapon of mass destruction is making the conscious decision to end innocent human life which can be tolerated under almost no imaginable circumstance. While in the past deterrence has work I believe that it can not sway countries such as Iran who claim they will wipe Israel of of the earth knowing what the consequences would be. But at the same time we can not simply nuke Iran as many ignorant people believe, A small radical fashion has taken power in Iran and I am more than willing to bet that the people of Iran don't want war anymore than we do. We must understand that it is radical leaders such as Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (the pres. of Iran) that need to be handled with rather than a nation of innocent people. We as a world have to be vigilant and responsible with nuclear power and understand the capabilities and risks of even having these weapons of mass destruction. With several examples of near tragedies in which the U.S. nearly fired nuclear missiles due to human error, I feel that we need to be careful that near accidents don't become a mass murder of peoples.

    1. I agree that we should lower the number of WMDs that we have stockpiled up. There is absolutely no reason to have dozens of thousands of ready-to-fire warheads as "back-up" during a war, if anything, we need less than 100 to use in case of emergencies only, and to me, that's still 100 too many.

  11. I believe we should keep all of our nukes. We should use them as deterrence so no one else will want to fire on us. This methods has worked for awhile now so I think we should stick with it. I believe it keeps the peace because I don't think any country is willing to put itself at risk.

    1. As I said in class, our generation does not fully understand the awesome impact and power that nukes have, our parents can somewhat comprehend, but not in the same way that their parents cound understand. The more and more generations we go without firing another nuke, the less they will understand what it can do, ergo, fire one not completely understanding its capabilities. Deternence only works for those who know and understand what a nuke can and will do.

    2. I agree, simple as that. we've seen what they have done before and most people don't want it to happen to them.

    3. I agree, it shows how much power we have and how much destruction we can cause. It is sort of an indimidation act towards other countries to let them know not to mess with us.

    4. I agree that we should keep all of our nukes because there's no point in getting rid of some of them and keeping the rest. We also need these nukes for backup.

    5. I agree, we should keep ours so we are not open for attack

    6. I have to disagree with your last statement I believe there are countries and individuals out there that are more than willing to put themselves and their nation at risk.

  14. I think we should continue to try and disable nuclear weapons but disable some of ours to show by example and i think other countries will follow. Other countries will follow Americas lead if we set a standard

  15. i still stand with my view point from class i think it is important to have them i dont think we should get rid of all of them we need to be prepared under all circumstances if we were to get rid of all of them and were then suddenly under attack and had absolutely no way of protecting ourselves we would be in a lot of trouble!
