WEEK 1 BLOG (1/9 - 1/15)

All of the attention so far in this legislative session in the Indiana Statehouse has been focused on one bill - "Right to Work." It began last year with the democrats in the House of Representatives staging a walk-out to prevent a vote from taking place...

After republicans agreed to table the bill, democrats returned and business forged ahead.  "Right to Work" was brought up once again during this legislative session to a similar reaction by democrats...

Now it appears as if republicans are making concessions to encourage the democrats to return to the House of Representatives and allow for a vote to take place...

This also involves allowing for the possibility of the public being allowed to vote on the fate of the bill in a referendum rather than it being decided in Congress.

Based on everything that has been discussed / what you've researched, should this be getting the attention that it has so far?  Is this bill that big of a deal?  Should it be decided by lawmakers or by the public?  Ultimately, is "Right to Work" a good idea for Indiana?  (due by 1/15)

  1. From what I have read, seen on TV, and have been influenced by a family member with great knowledge of the bill, I would have to say that, yes, it is that big of a deal...to the democrats. The only reason there is such an uproar about this bull is because of the democrats' very open display of opposition. It should not be getting the attention that it is, but because the unions' fund many of those in the democratic party, many are afraid to lose that money. The refusing to show is just an act so the democrats can prove to the unions that, yeah, they very much care about and need their support. I think the public should decide on this bill because that would be the most fair way to go about it. Lawmakers are putting their biases into their decisions, and after all, this country was built on the decision of the people, by the people, for the people. If the people were to vote, either way, I think someone would lose. I do not agree with the "Right to Work" bill and do not believe that it will bring in jobs. I do, however, believe it will hurt the employees who truly do not want to belong to a union. I believe that the best course of action is to take another look at the bill and customize it towards the people of Indiana, not just the money on the line for the decision makers.

  2. I would have to say that in my opinion that the Right to Work bill is a good idea and I think it would open a lot of opportunities for people to get jobs. Especially in the economy downfall we are experiencing... I think on the other hand that the coverage for the bill is a little bit overboard and kind of obnoxious, I feel like they should make a decision and move on. The Democrats need to co-operate and help get the bill passed or drop the bill.

  3. It is hard for me to make a decision about the bill. All bills and laws that are up for review seem to be a who's right/who's wrong between the republican and democratic party. I would be more comfortable passing a bill or agreeing with a bill if the creator could be trusted to be for the people and not for the party.

  4. I think this Bill is getting this much attention because it will probably be the downfall of the Unions, which have been controlling labor for decades. I don't like the way the Democrats are reacting towards it. They should stand up and vote. I personally am in favor of the Bill. It gives people a choice to pay Union dues or not. I also believe it can open up job competition and more "non union" people will be able to find jobs, however current Union laborers may end up losing pay, if the Unions fold and there is no one to negotiate their pay scale. I think large companies would like to see the Unions fold, it could save them money by not having to pay Union scale. I suppose like most choices there are positives and negatives. I do believe it should be decided on by the public, because the politicians are not doing a very good job coming to an agreement.

  5. Yes this Bill is a very big deal. I believe that it is a good idea to have the bill. The Democrats acted immature about the subject and should have been handled in a more appropriate way. I believe the people should be involved and vote for themselves and represent themselves. The economies of the states with the Right to Work and progressing so I do believe that it is right for Indiana.

  6. This bill should get the attention that it's getting because this could potentially could help the economy of Indiana. It would be nice for the public to be able to vote instead of lawmakers but most people really don't know what the law is really about. If they knew both sides of what the bill states and understood it all then they should be able to vote for it. Sadly, most people don't want to take there time to learn about it and only hear what they want to hear. In the end, the lawmakers should be the ones voting since they have the most knowledge on the subject. Right to Work is a great idea for Indiana because it would begin the process of making the unemployment rate decrease since the unemployment rate here is above the national average.

  7. I think the Bill is a pretty big deal. Agreeing with Christian, it seems like a good idea. Looking at the states that do have Right to Work, they seem to do better economically than states that do not have the bill. I believe that the citizens of Indiana should vote on the Bill. The Bill is supposed to help the people. Finally, the Bill is a great idea for Indiana. If we pass this bill, Indiana can become a great economical state with the Super Bowl coming to town and with this bill, if it passess.

  8. I think that the bill is a good idea and ita getting the attention it needs because people need to know about the bill and the people should be able to vote and represent themselves as individuals the bill will probs help the economy of indiana and give more jobs. The union is stupid kind of And i think ot will help the unemploent rate because its like 9 percent which is bad so maybs it will help decrease that and then it will all be okay and so that would make the bill a big deal

  9. I think that this bill is very important overall for indiana. People obviously have differing views on the subject, and it is necessary for every opinion to be heard. I think that since the people are the ones who are part of the unions, then they should decide if the bill becomes a law. There I'd obviously something wrong in the union system for people to dislike it, so it should be up to the people to change it. Overall, I think that it should be passed. The first amendment clearly states that we are given the right to assembly, which also means we have the right to opt out of assembly. People should not be forced into the unions, especially if they don't agree with them. From what I have read online, it seems that the states with the law are more productive in the job industry. Overall, I think it should be passesd.

    1. For some reason I cant comment on this post so Ill just reply, I think this is a big deal and something that the public needs to know about. Saying that i need to reinforce the knowing because I feel many people will see one of the commercials that has aired, as I have today, and immediately think to themselves that this bill is about something it is not. While I wish this was something the people could vote on I don't believe it is wise that that happen. I believe that many misinformed voters may make decision on facts that are simply not true or twisted truths. We elect politicians to represent us and while they do not always do a good job they better understand what the bill is really about which is why I believe in this case they should vote. I believe that this bill is good for Indiana and any other state that would or has considered it and I hope it will be passed into law.

  10. I'm not sure what to think about the right to work bill. On one hand it will help many people but it can also harm lots of people too. Even some people who think it will benefit them may find it will harm them. However the bill could also help workers to escape unfair unions. But while some workers will do that others might find collective bargaining to their interest and use the bill to gain union advantages without paying union dues. Whatever happens many will be upest and many will be happy.

  11. I think that this bill is good for Indiana because I think it's unfair that unions can force people to join them and pay unwanted membership fees. Also, the passing of this bill could help the economy recover from this past recession. I think that the lawmakers should be the decision-makers because they know a lot more about the bill's pros and cons than the majority of the state's population. This bill deserves the attention it's getting because it can create jobs for many unemployed people, but can also cause some people to actually lose their jobs, which is a big deal in this economy.

  12. I believe that this bill is good for Indiana because the power that the unions have is just to much. It is unfair for unions to demand fees that people do not want to pay. It is unfair that a person can be forced to join a union. this bill is challenging the power that the unions currently have. I hope this bill passes so worker will be able to have a choice on what they want to do, and not be forced to do anything they do not want to.

  13. I think that they should pas the bill. It seems like it is good idea and if other states would pass the bill it could help out their economy and buisnesses within the state. I also think it would be a good move for Indiana because it could help and boost a lot of small buisnesses in Indiana
